Windows 8.1 Update 1 released early

If you are not already aware, Microsoft have been preparing a whole host of improvements to Windows 8.1 entitled “Update 1” (creative huh!). Most of these changes are based around making Windows 8.1 more friendly to those of us using a traditional PC such as a desktop or non-touch notebook. If you are one of those people, and a little daring, there are two ways to get the update earlier than the scheduled April release.

Method 1 – Download and Apply Windows Update packages:

Grab each MSU package for each KB article for your flavour of Windows and apply in top to bottom order as shown above.

Method 2 – Edit the Registry:

1. Open up Windows Update and apply any waiting updates

2. Open up REGEDIT and go to the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\

3. Now create a new key inside and name it

SHWindowsPoolS14

4. Restart your PC

5. Check Windows Update for Update 1 Package

As always, your mileage may vary so tread carefully and enjoy the update!

Update

There are reports Microsoft have stopped the registry tweak from working and removed the files from Windows Update. Fear not, get the MSU package files from a MEGA mirror below:
